Approach
Hi! I'm Cate. Congrats on taking the first step of seeking a counsellor! I appreciate how vulnerable and intimidating this process can be. I look forward to walking along side you on your journey!
I have been working in the field for over 10 years. I draw strongly on several approaches, including:

-
Internal Family Systems (working with different parts of ourselves)
-
Mindfulness
-
Somatic therapy (connecting to the body)
-
Neuroscience (understanding the science of whats going on inside)
-
Anti-oppressive practice (bringing awareness to how certain systems oppress certain people)
-
Eco-therapy (reconnecting to nature)
-
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (how thoughts influence our emotions)
-
Wild psychology (reconnecting to our instinctual and sovereign natures)
-
Teaching from my mentors including Sharon Blackie, Dr. Clarissa-Pinkola Estes, Easkey Britton, Natalie Small, Elisa Spring, Coast Salish and Nuu-chah-nulth elders, locals activists and more

I might be a good fit for you if you want a therapist who:
-
weaves together scientifically proven approaches with intuitive and mystical widsom
-
balances being professional with being a real, down-to-earth human
-
focuses on both emotional processing and practical skill building
-
is gentle and approachable, and direct when appropriate
-
is committed to continuously growing their skills and knowledge
-
can hold your deepest, most shameful and vulnerable truths

Who I Work With
I work with individuals (aged 12+) in Ontario and BC who:
-
are struggling with depression, anxiety, relationships, life transitions, work stress, grief, trauma
-
feel like they don't fit into the mainstream / want to create a more alternative way of living that feels authentic to them
-
want to strengthen their relationship with nature
-
have a very busy mind or have difficulty understanding their emotions
-
have fast paced lives and feel unwell, or feel a call to slow down
Counselling Philosophy
I believe that healing can come from creating a safe space to metabolize stuck emotions and shame, from restoring our relationship with our bodies, our emotions, each other and our communities; and reconnecting to the land.
Together we might learn how to:
-
slow down
-
listen to your body
-
learn what you need and how to communicate your needs
-
practice mindfulness
-
understand your dreams, desires and your capacity
-
grow your self awareness and compassion
-
process stuck emotions
-
build practical coping skills such as regulating your nervous system
-
connect with nature
-
create a life that feels more nourishing and authentic to you
MY STORY
Hi! I'm Cate. I was born in Scarborough, Ontario, aka the territory of the Mississaugas, Huron-Wendat and Haudenosaunee people, and I currently reside on Vancouver Island, aka the home of the Coast Salish and Nuu-Chah-Nulth people. I'm a settler with Irish, English and Scottish ancestry. I currently offer counselling sessions to people in BC and Ontario, with in person and nature sessions available to people near Victoria, Sooke, Langord and Tofino.
I'm a Registered Counsellor (RCC) and Registered Social Worker (RSW), and I have a Masters of Social Work degree (MSW).
A lot of my personal experience guides my practice. I encountered many challenges at a young age, including loss, trauma, familial addictions, and more. I've also experienced mental health challenges myself, and know how trying they are.

From a young age, I had a strong appreciation for nature, but growing up in an urban area meant there was little access to natural spaces. After travelling overseas and being inspired by untouched landscapes, I came back to Toronto needing a refuge, so taught myself how to kayak on Lake Ontario. From there, my hunger to connect with the land grew even more, and I learned how to grow food.
When I moved to British Columbia, I became deeply involved with activism for indigenous sovereignty and the environment. I also fell in love with surfing and experienced the healing power of the ocean.

My current focus is weaving together my passion and skills in counselling with my love for nature. I am one of Canada's first certified surf therapists and part of the small percentage starting to take counselling outdoors.

When I'm not working, you can find me surfing, kayaking, going to yoga, meditating, gardening, or spending time with loved ones. I'm also an avid traveller with an endless desire for exploring new places and has been to over 30 countries.
